I notice many players get tight when they get close to the bubble. I also notice many players get loose and really try to build their chip stack for the final table at this point. It seems that there is about an equal amount of both in any tournament where you are getting close to the bubble. In the online tournaments that I like to play, this usually occurs around 15-22 player left, with the top 9 making the final table and the money. Rather than playing completely one way or another, I believe that there is a little better strategy to employee at these times.
First off, I do think aggression near the bubble is good. Many players are getting tight and protecting their stacks, figuring that they have invested this much time in the tournament, they might as well stick around to get paid. This may not be a bad strategy if your chip stack is big enough to make it. What these players do not realize is that the blinds and antes will really start to affect them at this point. $10k in chips is not nearly enough when the blinds start getting up to $2000-$1000 w/antes.
Therefore, I think the best idea is to look to steal and be aggressive whenever you play a hand. Personally, I do not like to play a hand that I would not feel comfortable calling an all-in with at this point. The only exception would be to make a position play that I feel sure would not result in a call.
At these points, with a stack of lets say about $20,000, and blinds and antes totally $3500 or so, I will raise at least 3x-4x the big blind. What that will do is make the players who are just trying to hang on uncomfortable enough to fold. If my opponents have say $10,000-$15,000, they cannot call a $4k bet without a great hand. What I am looking to do is simply take down the blinds and antes at this point. I do not even want to seeA� a flop if I can help it. If I come up against a very small stack, that is ok, otherwise, I want to push everyone else out of the hand and build my stack.
There is a rule I have that goes along with this, however. Once I have built my stack, I will tighten up and only play very premium cards like Q-Q, K-K, A-A or A-K. I will pre-determine a point that I want my chip stack to get to and once I am there, I will stop pushing.
The reason for this is simple. If I have built my stack enough to coast to the final table, why risk it? Obviously, if I can double up, great. If I can put out a small stack, great. But if I know I have enough to take me to the money, I can relax a bit.
Many times, I will see a player make aggressive plays and do an excellent job of turning his $10k into $30k, only to blow it calling someone when he has A-4 off suit. This is dumb. If you have done the work to put yourself in good shape for the final table, don't risk it trying to win every hand. Remember, some of the tight players will only be playing premium hands. If you call an all-in with A-6 off suit, you may find yourself up against A-K and totally dominated. Don't let that happen unless you can avoid it.
Bubble play is all about size. If you are short stacked, you have to play a huge variety of hands. If you have a medium stack, you might pick your spots. If you have a big stack, be more particular. Don't enter into pots unless you can steal or are pretty sure you have the best chance to win.A� Don't be one of these players who builds up a stack only to lose it with one dumb call. The skill card is the last card on the flop in hold'em, more commonly referred to as fifth street or the river card. Calling it the skill card is something players do when multiple hands are turned over, and somebody basically needs to get lucky. In order to win, the player behind must hit one of his outs to win the pot. Usually the outs are outnumbered by the cards that can come that favor the leader.
Let's take a look at that math though, because sometimes the expectation of that decisive skill card can be surprisingly weak or strong. Since you know at this point there are six known cards to you including the your two hole cards and the four community cards, that leaves forty-six unknown cards. Your job is to know how many of those 46 cards will help you, how many will not help you, and in some cases, how many will help you AND your opponent.
Let's take for example if you have an open- ended straight draw where you are holding T9 and the board shows J82. That means any queen or seven is going to make your straight and very likely the best hand. Since there are 4 queens and 4 sevens left unseen in the deck you have 8 help cards of the 46 left. You only get one chance to hit your card so that equates to 8 divided into 46 equals 0.1739 or 17.4% of the time, you will hit your card. To convert that to odds just take 100 divided by the percentile, then subtract 1. Use that number as a ratio to 1. So in this example it is 100/17.4 which equals 5.747 then subtract 1 and you come with 4.747 or in odds terms 4.75:1.
Now let's take an example where the Skill Card has a much higher chance of appearing on the river. Remember in hold'em that if two players go to the river, they normally have some kind of hand, which means that on many of these showdown confrontations, a lot of outs may overlap for both players. You are holding JcTc And your opponent is holding KcQc, the community cards are 9c8dAc and the Jh. Now you definitely have some outs here as you ponder shoving all-in. You feel any Ten, Seven, Queen or club will win, in case he calls you with presumably, top pair. But those outs are definitely overlapping as any club is going to make him a better flush and a Ten will make him the nut Broadway straight.
In this situation you are playing for him NOT to hit a card, because in fact you are a clear favorite here. Let's take a look at his "Skill Card" chances though as they are now more significant than you may have thought before he turned over his hole cards. There are 7 clubs left in the deck, 3 non-club Tens, and 3 Kings.

Obviously, if you bust out of the Nightly Hundred Grand on Pokerstars, yeah your bankroll is dented but so what? More than likely you will still be battling away in 6 or 7 other multis at the same time.

I argue that the MTT shark is not that far off from the average MTT grinder in terms of pure skill level. Let's say the shark opens in MP with 4c4d. The button 3 bets with whatever. Air, or a monster. Who knows? The shark sure doesn't.
As a poker purist and long time player, I am no longer at all one bit surprised to see the shark shove all in knowing he is getting called in this spot. Or see the shark snap call a 3 bet shove. It happens over and over and over again. The railbirds all chime in about how sick the shark is.
Is he really that sick?
Or has Online Poker made it actually kinda easy to make this kind of move? If you win what turns out to be a coinflip, you look like a genius. You went in with the best hand, it held, and you won a ton of chips. If you lose, oh well that's poker, they'll say. If you get your chips in dominated, well, they say you need to get lucky to win MTTs and its actually right to get your money in bad, or rather, if you never get your money in bad, then you are in fact, PLAYING bad.
So what's the shark's trend? Play multi after multi in this type of reckless fashion and odds are he will snap off at least ONE if the poker run-good gods are on his side.
So what does all of this mean to the average player?
Realize that the trend is THERE. These players are obviously erring on the side of aggression online. They are GETTING IT IN. And they don't care. A lot of these online players look sick in the moves they make, but the fact is they are just taking advantage of the format. There is, in my opinion, way less REGARD for these actual moves than what you might expect. How can the shark really know where those pocket 4s stand when he gets 3-bet? The answer, more often than not, is he quite obviously cannot.
Just know when you consider your next move, that he doesn't care.
